Skyler and I had the {pleasure} of speaking in church today in our
new little branch we go to...aren't we just so lucky? And I actually really loved the topic that I was given to speak on, which was
{Teaching Our Children Gospel Principles}
I think I loved it because I feel like I came from the worlds greatest family. I know everybody thinks that...but seriously, I REALLY think that.
So my parents were pretty much my example for the entire talk.
While gathering material for my talk I came across this quote. So I typed it up and thought I would share...because I loved it that much!
It came from Gospel doctrine: selections from the sermons and writings of Joseph F. Smith
You can read it here (pg. 396-398), and everyone should jump on over and read a couple pages, you will love it.
When I read this I thought of my father to a "T". Once again, I'm one of those kids that thinks I have the greatest father in all of the world.
And yes... I REALLY do believe it.
And to make you all believe how really awesome he is I have a funny story that goes along with this quote.
A couple of Summer's ago I was home for a visit. My brothers and my Dad were going to go mow some lawns, so we all heading outside. I was watching my little brothers hook the trailer up to my Dad's pickup and they may or may not have forgotten to latch the trailer;) As soon as they drove the lawnmower up onto the trailer, the front end of the trailer swung up and smashed into the tailgate and left a nice big scratch across the end of my Dad's truck. My brothers and I very shocked and what had just happened, turned to my Dad waiting for a response....He said nothing(except something like Oh well, it's just a truck, glad your ok). And he even took my brother out for ice cream when they were done mowing!!
I can remember multiple stories like this. We knew we did something that we thought deserved a beating, or at least a good yelling. (Like when I crashed my Dad's new motorcycle and busted off the back taillight & headlight...) And always, my Dad was there to make sure we were OK, speaking to us kindly and always, ALWAYS, showing us how much he loved us.
I came to the conclusion that we teach by our example. The absolute best way my parents taught us was by their example, their love for their children and their love for the Savior.
Ultimately, I would hope that I can look to the greatest example and teach as the Savior taught,
with {LOVE}.
And there you have it....my mushy gushy Sunday scoop. Now you should go and read a really good talk.
Becoming Goodly Parents. Yep, you won't be disappointed. It's only about a thousand times better than anything I just said.
* * Happy Sunday * *
